So-Called Dollars

Professor Montroville Wilson Dickeson (1813-1882) was a

numismatist who produced copies of the 1776 Continental dollar

and sold them as souvenirs for the Centennial Exposition of

1876. Restrikes from these copy dies were made by John Pinches

& Co. for Empire Coin Co. and later by coin dealer Robert

Bashlow. Both the Empire restrikes and those by Bashlow

are distinguishable for the original Dickeson strikes. Bashlow

eventually donated the dies to the Smithsonian Institution.
