RARE DEWITT CLINTON MEDALET BY FURST, 1812.

Neuzil 49. 33.5mm.White Metal. Moritz Furst, Sc. XF/AU

with some original luster still adhering. The obverse bears a bust

of Clinton to the right, DEWITT CLINTON MAYOR around.

FURST F. below the bust. The reverse bears a view of the City

Hall building, NEW-YORK CITY HALL above. Inscribed in

the exergue: FOUNDED MAY 28, 1803/ OCCUPIED MAY 4./

1812/ FURST F.

Neuzil estimates the population of this rare medalet as between

6-10 pieces. Clinton was one of New York’s most important

politicians. He was appointed to the Senate of the United States

in 1802, but resigned to became Mayor of New York City in

1803. While mayor, he ran for the Presidency of the United

States against James Madison and was narrowly defeated.

McSorley believes that that medalet is related to his presidential

campaign. If so, it would make this piece one of our earliest

politicals! We sold a proof with light rub and scattered tarnish

streaks and field marks in our 2005 Auction 74 for $1035.00 (I)

with original shank. The obverse bears an ornamental design

while the reverse is inscribed: MARTIN VAN BUREN

WHH-G. 34mm. Silver. (17.8 grams) Choice

Uncirculated. Obv: Military bust of Harrison to the left,

his name, rank and birth date around. The reverse depicts a

log cabin, THE PEOPLES CHOICE above. In exergue: THE

HERO/ OF/ TIPPECANOE.

The obverse die was originally used on a contemporary

sulphide (See WHH 1840-99) Only 26 tokens each were struck

in copper, brass and white metal. Amere 11 tokens were struck in

silver! (I)

military bust of Harrison to the left and the legend: MAJ. GEN.

W.H. HARRISON. BORN FEB. 9, 1773. Rx: * RELIGION

OUR SAFEGUARD * TEMPERANCE OUR SHIELD around

SABBATH/ SCHOOL/ JUBILEE 4/ 1842.

There is a statement in the 1864 McCoy Sale to the effect that

3 medals each were struck in Silver, brass, copper nickel, copper

and white metal. (F)

HC 1844-35. 24mm. Brass. Plain edge.

Unsigned, but ascribed to J.F. Thomas A nice lustrous Unc.

Holed, as issued with original ring. Obv: HENRY CLAY BORN

APRIL 12, 1777/ THE ASHLAND FARMER around a naked

Clay left. The date, 1844, runs upward diagonally below the

truncation of the bust. Rx: Wreath around THE NOBLE/ AND/

PATRIOTIC/ SUPPORTER/ OF/ PROTECTION. (F-G)

179. PRESIDENT, HENRY CLAY 1845.

HC 1844-40. 21.5mm.

White Metal. Unsigned, but ascribed by Charles McSorley to

James Bale. Extremely Fine with some underlying luster. Holed

for suspension. An obverse bust of Clay is surrounded by an open

oak wreath is enclosed by the legend: PRESIDENT, HENRY

CLAY 1845. (Similar to the obverse of HC 1844-39 but from a

different die with a larger head of Clay.) On the reverse, UNITED

STATES OF AMERICA encloses a displayed eagle with a U.S.

shield on its breast. A foul anchor below. (F-G)
