Lincoln in a circle. The reverse presents an oval shield inscribed

US at center, surmounted by an eagle and flanked by two flags.

Drum, cannon & cannon balls are below. Much rarer in copper

than in brass. (G)

LINCOLN - WASHINGTON.

AL 1864-21; C: 3-240W;

Baker 235. 27.8mm. White Metal. W.H. Key, Sc. XF/AU.

Holed for suspension. Obverse bust of Lincoln to the left his

name, title and date 1864 around. The reverse bears the legend,

THE UNION MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED around

a head of Washington resting in star-studded clouds flanked by

draped flags. (G)

194.

LINCOLN - JOHNSON FERROTYPE IN GAULT FRAME.

AL 1864-94; C: 4-120B. 25.3mm. Gilt Brass shell. Holed at top

for suspension. Lincoln’s ferrotype photograph is encased in an

hour glass shaped, gilt brass frame, inscribed: FOR PRESIDENT

- ABRAHAM LINCOLN. On the reverse, Andrew Johnson’s

photograph appears in a round, gilt brass frame, encircled by the

inscription, FOR VICE PRESIDENT - ANDREW JOHNSON.

The patent date “August 12, 1862” appears at the bottom. The

shell is lustrous AU. The left side of the Lincoln ferrotype is dark

and the left half of the portrait is mostly obscured. The Johnson

portrait is bright and completely visible and has some very minor

crackling. (I)

LINCOLN ASSASSINATION TOKEN, 1864.

C: 15-570W;

King 870. 25mm. White Metal . VF/XF with a dark area behind

Lincoln’s shoulder. Obverse with a bearded bust of Lincoln

facing right. * ABRAHAM LINCOLN * IN GOD WE TRUST

around. “25” below the bust. ASSASSINATED APRIL 14,

1865 to either side of the bust. At the center of the

reverse is a spread eagle, 5 stars to left, 4 to right. FOR EVER

above, INSEPERABLE (sic), below. The border legend reads;

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with 2 stars to either side of

the date, 1864.

This obverse die of this token was first used without the

ASSASSINATEDAPRIL 14, 1865 inscription (C:15-550B; King

878.) and was paired with the reverse, as above. For many years

the presence of the “25” below the bust was thought to indicate

that the token was intended as a pattern for a 25 cent piece. More

modern scholarship, however, has concluded that the “25” refers

to the 25 states – forever and inseparable - which were able to

cast votes in the Electoral College in the 1864 election.  After

Lincoln’s death, the obverse die was altered by the addition of

ASSASSINATED APRIL 14, 1865 and served to mark the

date that Lincoln was shot. (He died the following day.) Our

experience it that this assassination variation is somewhat rarer

than the first variety. (G)

LINCOLN MEMORIAL TOKEN, ND.

King 283;

Cunningham 9-640 type. 20mm. Gilt (brass?) RE. Proof-like

Unc. Obv: Bust right, ASSASSINATED BY THE PLOTTERS

OF TREASON. Rx: MARTYR FOR LIBERTY around a

memorial column surrounded by rays and 36 stars. Below, in

small letters, LEWIS JOY, NEW YORK. This gilt variation

is not listed by Cunningham. Nor, for that matter, does he list a

plain Brass striking (He does list silvered brass.) Our experience

is that most of these scarce pieces turn up in brass, and were

probably gilded (F-G)
