The New Jersey Historical  Society was one of the three entities

(along with the NY Historical Society and New York Chamber of

Commerce) that hosted official functions of the 1889 Washington

Centennial Inaugural.  The event was the first Congressional

enacted national holiday.  Among the official events was the

tracing of George Washington’s travel to New York from

Elizabeth New Jersey which was re-enacted by President

Harrison and Cabinet members as well as distinguished guests.

The New Jersey Historical Society members and special guests

wore a distinct ribbon, an example of which is offered.  The ribbon

is comparable to the official ribbon badge worn in New York by

the New York Centennial Inaugural Committee Members. The

New Jersey Historical Society presented President Harrison with

a special ribbon at Elizabeth and later presented him with an

official gold medal from the Society, listed by Susan Douglas in

her pioneer work as D-1 and 2.   (G)
