HK 780. GORHAM CO. CARTWHEEL DOLLAR, 1896.
R5, Shornstein 6; Zerbe 5. 51.9mm. Silver. About Uncirculated
with attractive original toning.
This popular cartwheel dollar was issued by the Gorham
Company for the 1896 Presidential campaign. At the time it
was issued, 823 grains of coin silver was equal to the value of
one gold dollar. Four years later, when the company issued
a similar piece for the 1900 campaign, the value of silver had
fallen so that it took 870 grains of coin silver to equal one
dollar. These Gorham Dollars were voted #22 in the Whitman
listing of the 100 Greatest American Tokens and Medals (G-H)

dark spots, as shown. “NEVER KEEP A PAPER DOLLAR IN
YOUR POCKET TILL TOMORROW.” These medalets were
issued by an eccentric Connecticut lawyer, Aaron White, to
publicize his belief that the Federal Government was going
bankrupt because of its undue reliance on paper currency. ( G )

HK 852. DICKESON “RESTRIKE” OF THE
CONTINENTAL DOLLAR, 1876
. R7. DeLorey Dickeson-1.
Silver. NGC MS 65. Prooflike. Only 50 examples in silver were
made from these dies which copied the design of the original
Continental Dollar. Examples struck from the Dickeson dies are
thus not “restrikes” as they were not struck from the original
Continental Dollar dies.
