So-Called Dollars

scattered spots of dark tarnish on the obverse (which is pictured

as the reverse in the 2

nd

edition book.) Jeff Shevlin, the So-Called

Dollar Guy, informs us that he has identified no less than 5

different die varieties on the TER CENTENNIAL side and at

least 7 different die varieties on the other. These have yet to

be fully documented so that we can attached catalog numbers to

them. This and the following two examples will be differentiated

by the relationship of the 7 in the date 1907 to the letters above

in SHIP VIRGINIA. We won’t even attempt to differentiate the

variations in the other side. This example has the 7 underneath

the V of VIRGINIA. (F)

EF-45. The reverse suffers from a series of field abrasions above

the building. The second edition description is in error when it

states that “Manufactures is misspelled Manufacturfs, A closed

examination with a glass of the “F” reveals that it is in fact an “E”

with the bottom foot of the “E” very weakly struck. In the word

below, the last letter, “G” suffers from a similar defect. (F-G)
