The Unity States pieces were struck about 1820 but backdated
to 1783. The Baker 1A discovery token was purchased by James
King in a December 1972 Harmer-Rooke auction. The token
then appeared as lot # 42 in Heritage Gallery’s 2007 Milwaukee
ANA sale where it was offered in an NGC Slab graded XF-45.
When it was offered in the Heritage Sale, the cataloger noted
that “The magnificent John Ford collection did not include an
example of this variety, and we believe that it remains unique.” It
realized an impressive $17,250.00!
The example offered here is now only the second known of this
variety. This is an impressive statement when one considers that
the collecting and cataloging of Washington pieces has been
going on for over 200 years and that the first discovery of this
variety came 150 years after it was first struck. It’s rarity has
surely stood the test of time. The question of valuation is a tough
one. The Heritage specimen, three grades higher and considered
unique, brought $17,250.00 We believe that a very conservative
value of this newly discovered second piece in lower condition
would be in the $2500-3500.00 range. However, if two collectors
decide to tango, we would not be surprised to see it bring a much
higher!
