CLAY * BORN APRIL 12 1777 around a togated bust of
Clay to the left. Raised ornamental frame. The reverse bears
the legend: WEIGHED IN THE BALANCE & FOUND
WANTING, enclosing scales balanced in favor of WHIGS over
DEMOCRATS. Dated 1840 at center.
The reverse die originally appeared on a Harrison token (WHH
1840-46) from the 1840 campaign. The maker of this piece
evidently decided it was not worth the trouble to change the
date on the reverse to 1844. The die was also used to strike HC
1844-36. Among the most rare of the Clay shell medalets. It was
missing in the fabled Ford Collection sold by Stacks/
Bowers in September, 2013. (H)
