CLAY * BORN APRIL 12 1777 around a togated bust of

Clay to the left. Raised ornamental frame. The reverse bears

the legend: WEIGHED IN THE BALANCE & FOUND

WANTING, enclosing scales balanced in favor of WHIGS over

DEMOCRATS. Dated 1840 at center.

The reverse die originally appeared on a Harrison token (WHH

1840-46) from the 1840 campaign. The maker of this piece

evidently decided it was not worth the trouble to change the

date on the reverse to 1844. The die was also used to strike HC

1844-36. Among the most rare of the Clay shell medalets. It was

missing in the fabled Ford Collection sold by Stacks/

Bowers in September, 2013. (H)

D. 19.5mm. WM. Choice PL Unc. A beautiful premium

condition piece. Obv: FOR PRESIDENT above a bust of Clay

to the left. 1845 at bottom. Below the bust is the designer’s

initial, “T”. Rx: HENRY CLAY/ WILL/CARRY/ THE DAY. A

star to right and to left.

Elder attributed the obverse die to Benjamin True while DeWitt

thought it was executed by Joseph Thomas. We agree with

DeWitt. Scarce. (F)

FRIEND OF EQUAL RIGHTS SHELL MEDALET.

1844-6, 25.7mm. Gilt brass shell. J.F. Thomas, Sc. Choice

bright About Uncirculated with a partial hole at 12:00 on the

obverse. Missing loop at top. Obverse bust of Polk to the left

surrounded by the legend: JAMES K. POLK FRIEND OF

EQUAL RIGHTS. The reverse legend: YOUNG HICKORY

DALLAS & VICTORY, encloses a bust of Dallas to the left.

This is one of the very first campaign pieces made in the form

of a brass shell. This one is formed of three pieces: back-to-

back uniface medalets of the candidates held together by a round

ornamental frame. DeWitt notes that such items were not known

before 1844. ($2000+)

ZACHARY TAYLOR

A RARE TAYLOR SHELL.

ZT 1848-19. 26.4mm. Gilt brass

shell. Choice About Uncirculated. with original suspension

loop. The obverse and reverse shells are joined by a frame

with relief decorations. Obverse with MAJOR GENL.

TAYLOR BORN 1790 enclosing a military bust of Taylor

to the right. The reverse legend: GENL. TAYLOR NEVER

SURRENDERS encloses: PALO ALTO./ RESACA DE LA/

PALMA, MONTEREY./ AND/ BUENA VISTA. We last ran an

AU example in our 64

sale in 1998 where it brought $825.00. A

choice example of a piece described by Satterlee as “excessively

rare”. (I+)

Chocolate Bronze. Signed, “Key. Nice Unc. Obv: Front facing

bust of the famed temperance reformer; FATHER MATTHEW to

either side., Rx: Inscription within a central cross: I PROMISE/

WITH THE/ DIVINE/ ASSISTANCE TO ABSTAIN/ FROM

ALL/ INTOXICATING DRINKS,/ AND TO PREVENT, BY

ADVICE/ AND EXAMPLE/ INTEMPERANCE INOTHERS.

Rare - the only the second we have handled. We sold the first (in

WM) for $105.00 in our 2003 Sale #72.

Sc. Choice BU with a couple of tiny flyspecks. Unholed. Obv:

MAJ. GEN. WINFIELD SCOTT. U.S.A. around military bust

left. Rx; SCOTT WOUNDED above battle scene showing a

wounded Scott lying on the ground being assisted by his men.

LUNDYS LANE, at bottom.

H.W. Hayden was an engraver who worked for Scovill. This is

his only signed political and is one of the best executed in the
