frame at center. BARBER and MORGAN signatures in the

exergue. Two female allegorical figures are seated on the top

horizontal line of the frame to either side of a U.S. shield. Below

is an early engine, the ROCKET 1829. Around the border of the

reverse is the legend: NATIONAL EXPOSITION OF RAILWAY

APPLIANCES CHICAGO 1883. Within a central wreath is

inscribed: AWARDED TO/ (engraved) J. G. WILSON/ FOR/

(engraved) BEST/ CAR WINDOW BLINDS.

This medal is unlisted by Julian. If indeed it was not struck at the

U.S. Mint, it represents an unusual combination of the talents of

these two Mint engravers for a non-Mint medal. (G)

NAMED NEW YORK COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND

SURGEONS HARSEN AWARD MEDAL, 1891.

Storer

1471. 91mm. Copper Electrotype. Charles Muller, Sc. XF

with a very visible edge dent on the obverse at 8:00. The edge

is engraved in an ornate script at 6:00: LE GRAND ALLEN

WALKER/ THIRD PRIZE. There is some old corrosion at the

seam on the edge in the area of the inscription. Obverse with a

bust to the left of Dr. Jacob Harsen. HARSEN MEDAL above

and the date 1859 below the truncation of the bust. On the

reverse a physician is shown conducting bedside rounds in a

composition, apparently based upon a photographic image,

which leaves little doubt as to the proper relationship between

preceptor, junior colleagues and patient in a charity ward on the

eve of the Civil War. Inscribed in the exergue is: COLLEGE

OF PHYSICIANS/ AND SURGEONS./ NEW-YORK.

Dr. Walker graduated from medical school in 1891. His third

placed prize was for “Proficiency at Examination.” This is the

first awarded specimen we have offered. We have previously sold

unawarded used examples for $356.00 and $488.00 respectively.

7” Cast Bronze. Ralph Bartlett Goddard, Sc. Sc. Uniface.

Integral loop & ring for suspension. Choice About Uncirculated

with an attractive deep brown patina. This attractive plaque

features a very high relief bust to half right, EMERSON

incused at top. Incused at bottom left is COPYRIGHT BY/ R.B.

GODDARD, SC. 1892. Inscribed on the truncation of the bust

is: CAST BY THE HENRY BONNARD BRONZE CO./ N.Y.

Ralph Bartlett Goddard was a well-known sculptor whose is

notable for bas-relief portraits cast in bronze of prominent men,

including a series of 12 foremost authors and poets of modern

English literature. From this group we have identified Nathaniel

Hawthorne; Charles Dickens; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

John Greenleaf Whittier, Phillips Brooks; Carlyle; Charles

Parkhurst and Alfred Lord Tennyson as well as Emerson. (G)

JANVIER MEDAL BY CHARPENTIER, CA.

1892.

52.8 x 60mm. Octagonal. Bronze. Alexandre Charpentier,

Sc. Struck by the Janvier firm with their triangular edge mark

on the rim and marked bronze. XF/AU with a few dark spots on

the reverse, as shown. the obverse features a workman, nude

from the waist up, turning the fly wing of a coining press.

The artist’s small AC monogram is in the left field, and the

Duval Janvier logo in the right field. The reverse is inscribed

with incused lettering: REDUCTION/ ET/ FRAPPE/ DE/

MEDAILLES/ 22 RUE DE MONTMORENCY PARIS. Three
