Mr. Allen was paid tribute thusly: “With his bold and risky

resolve to build a Boeing 707 prototype (with no guarantee of a

buyer), Bill Allen simultaneously built the American commercial

jet airliner industry. The 707, designed in a Dayton, Ohio hotel

room in 1949, revolutionized the speed, comfort and availability

of air travel, and laid the groundwork for today’s jet transport

workhorses.” (I)

1.7mm thick, 18.9 grams. Extremely Fine. Obv. Silver shell with

rotating surface inscribed CALENDARIUM PERPETUUM and

arabesques. Six rectangular openings reveal Days of the month,

Rev. Bucolic scene of farmer and dog, sheep and barn in

Dienstag

),

(modern

Sonabend

). Curving opening at right reveals days of month, 1

through 31.

This intricate and fully operational calendar bears no maker’s

name, nor any date of manufacture. There is no modern catalog

of medallic calendars. The last American study was the 1954-

1979 series of articles in

The Numismatist

by two great pioneers

of exonumia studies in the U.S., the late Melvin and George Fuld.

The probable date of the present piece is based on the lettering

style and overall similarity to two examples published by the

Fulds. (G)
