OFFICIAL HUDSON-FULTON CELEBRATION MEDAL,

1909.

Miller 42; Baxter 99; Marqusee 187. 102mm. Bronze.

Emil Fuchs, Sc. (W&H). About Uncirculated. Edge marked:

ALANSON SKINNER. Obverse scene of Hudson and his

sailors on the deck of the Half Moon. The reverse presents an

allegory of Steam Navigation composed of a central female

figure holding a scale model of the first steam powered boat,

the Clermont, flanked by two other seated female figures, one

holding an anchor and the other a navigation chart.

Skinner was Assistant Curator of Anthropology at the American

Museum of Natural History from 1907-1915, Skinner wrote “The

Indians of Manhattan Island,” a pamphlet which accompanied an

exhibition he assembled for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration at the

Museum. –No doubt this medal was awarded for his work on the

pamphlet and display. (F)

obverse edge mark at 2:00. Obv: Beaded bust right wearing

bishop’s mitre, SANCTUS PATRICIUS to either side. Rx:

IRISH (shamrock) AMERICA above seated woman playing a

harp. HIBERNIA. 1909 in exergue. (F)

AVIATION, 1910.

Malpas 186. 50.7mm. Bronze. Carl

Schrieber, des. (W&H) Uncirculated. Obverse with a winged

nude male youth at center. In the background is a montage

of contemporary aircraft; Wright Bros. plane, dirigible &

balloon. The reverse depicts a soaring bird over the inscription,

PROGRESS / IN/ AVIATION. In much smaller letters below,

CHICAGO NUMISMATIC SOCIETY/ MEDALLIC SERIES.

A competition for the design of this medal was held among

the students at the Chicago Art Institute. Schrieber won the

competition. At the ANA convention in Chicago in 1910, the

medal was sold to members and guests. Less than 100 were

sold at $2.00 each. This is only the fourth of these medals that

we have handled – the last one sold for $184.00 in our 2007 77
