Choice Uncirculated. Uniface. The original suspension

attachment on the reverse is present. Wonderful portrait of

Whitman with rippling hair and beard, his name above.

Part of a series of distinctive portrait reliefs of literary figures

and artist friends executed by Flanagan after his return to

America from Paris. We sold a similar example in our 2005

Sale #74 for $345.00

CITY OF DETROIT MEDAL TO VETERANS KILLED

IN WORLD WAR I, 1919.

Murtha 116. 70mm. Cast Bronze.

Paul Manship, Sc. (MACO). About Uncirculated, slightly dark.

The obverse bears a wined female figure representing Victory

striding forward holding a sword wrapped in palm leaf, a

radiant sun in the background. Legend: VIXIT * VIVIT *

VIVET. The reverse legend reads: PRESENTED BY THE

CITY OF DETROIT 1919. At center is a scroll with fasces

behind, inscribed: IN MEMORY/ OF ONE/ WHO/

DIED IN THE/ CAUSE OF/ FREEDOM AND/ HUMANITY.

An eagle holding a laurel wreath is perched atop the end of a

cannon at top.

This is a rare medal and a quintessential example of Manship’s

medallic genius. Only 900 medals were struck for presentation

to Detroit veterans. An AU brought $977.50 in our last

sale.

PEACE OF VERSAILLES ANS MEDAL, 1919.

321. 63.7mm. Bronze Chester Beach, Sc. Struck by Medallic

Art Co., but without their edgemark. Edge numbered “51” (of

318). Uncirculated. Obverse with allegorical figures of Peace

and Justice to either side of a heroic figure astride Pegasus, the

winged horse The reverse bears a view of the City of Versailles

and the inscription, PEACE OF VERSAILLES 1919. At bottom

is a banner inscribed with the name of the American Numismatic

Society, which issued this medal, This is typical low relief

work by Beach, who also produced the Lexington-Concord

commemorative half dollar

ART DECO MEDALLION OF ISADORA DUNCAN, ND.

100mm. Bronze. Henry Dropsy, Sc. Extremely Fine with a few

minor edge nicks., Edge numbered “41”Uniface. Depicted here

in low relief is a figure said to be inspired by the innovative and

influential American dancer, Isadora Duncan (1878-1917.) The

plaque bears the signature of Henry Dropsy (1885 - 1969), a

sculptor and engraver who was a prolific French medallist and

worked mainly in collaboration with Victor Canale. An

outstanding example for his work! (G)

HERMAN L VAIL MEDAL FOR EXPLORATION

100.4mm. Roughly cast bronze. Signed “SAR” on the exergual

line on the obverse. Plain edge. Obverse: KEEWAYDIN, along

the border at upper left. Below: A radiant sun in the background

of a forest scene. Beneath are two men in a canoe. In the exergue

is what appears to be a beaver gnawing on a piece of wood. Four

fish swim to the right. Reverse: HERMAN L. VAIL. MEDAL .

FOR EXPLORATION around an uninscribed center.

We have had this medal for many years and have been able to

find very little at all about it. Keewaydin is the name of a camp in

Canada, Maine, Vermont & Minnesota. There was a Herman A.
