Miscellaneous Tokens and Medals

At the dedication ceremonies, 14k gold medals were presented

to the Governors of the two states; the mayors of the cities

received these sterling silver medals and bronze specimens were

presented to members of the engineering and construction staffs

and others who had helped in the construction of the bridge.

We have previously sold only three of these silver specimens.

Lot #428 in our 1987 Great Western Collection Sale went for

$440.00, A similar Unc. example brought $412.50 and an AU

example brought $385.00 as Lot #483 in our 1990 Ambassador

Middendorf Sale. Twenty five years later, an example should

bring $750+.

CARNEGIE FOUNDATION HERO MEDAL, 1932.

x 54.3mm. Bronze. Louis Dejean, Sc. (Paris Mint. Cornucopia

BRONZE edgemark) Uncirculated. The obverse is inscribed:

FONDATION/ CARNEGIE/1909 above a bust to the

right of Andrew Carnegie. Below: LIBERALITE/ D’UN

CITOYEN AMERICAIN/ POUR RECOMPENSER/ LES

ACTES DE COURAGE/ ACCOMPLIS EN FRANCE.

(Carnegie Foundation, 1909. Funds given by Mr. Carnegie,

US. Citizen, to support heroic acts which were accomplished in

France). Reverse: AUX HEROS/ DE LA CIVILISATION (To

the Heroes of Civilization). A winged nude figure of Victory

right is shown placing a crown of laurels on the head of a

naked male figure on bended knee.. In the exergue, is the name

of the awardee : GUILLAND (J)/ 1932.

Housed in its original red plush presentation cast. A few years

after establishing the Hero Fund in the United States, Carnegie

decided to launch them in foreign countries. Today medals are

awarded by funds in France, Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands,

Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, and Italy (G)

XF. Obv: CAMP STORE CO. 1501. C.C.C. around. Rx: GOOD

FOR IN TRADE around 5¢. Variously attributed to Dascanso,

CA. Priest River Idaho and Allen, Darby & Birch Creek (Rubick)

, Montana. It is not known at which of the various “1501 Camp

“ locations this token was used. (See:

We note an eBay sale in March of 2013 for $454.59 – seems a bit

excessive – we’ll let today’s market decide.

COURAGE PLAQUETTE BY AVARD FAIRBANKS,

1933.

Marqusee 134. 89.5 x 59.5mm. Tombstone shaped.

Bronze. Avard Fairbanks, Sc. (MACO) Uncirculated, with

some irregular toning on both sides, Obverse with a muscular

half length male profile to the left; COURAGE, below. The

reverse is inscribed: DEDICATED/ TO ALL/ THOSE WHO

HAVE/ THE COURAGE TO / FACE ADVERSITY WITH A

CONQUERING/ SPIRIT. Inscribed below the sunrise at bottom

in longhand script is a man’s name that is indecipherable to our

eye. (The last name may be “Rubloff”).

This is one of Fairbanks’ most popular medals. As this reverse
