Flanagan, Sc. Uncirculated. Obverse with a bearded bust of

Saint-Gaudens to the left. AUGUSTUS SAINT- GAUDENS/

STATUAIRE AETATIS. LVI in small letters above. The reverse

bears the inscription: IN HONOR/ OF AN AMERICAN/

SCVLPTOR/ AVGVSTVS SAINT/ GAVDENS/ In small

1937 UAW SIT DOWN STRIKE HONOR AWARD, 1937.

37.2mm with scalloped edges. Silvered Bronze. X F / AU.

Obv: Upper and lower scrolls inscribed: HONOR AWARD/ SIT

DOWN STRIKE. Dated 19 37 to either side. Square scene at

center showing workers sitting down in factory. Above: FOR.

Below: WINNING. Rx: THE OFFICERS OF YOUR INT’L

UNION / APPRECIATE YOUR/ LOYALTY/ IN THE FIGHT/

TO IMPROVE. AMERICAN LABOR CONDITIONS. Gear

design at center.

This is an important piece of American Labor Union history. It

is a relic of the United Auto Workers efforts to earn recognition

as the bargaining agent for General Motors Co. workers, and to

make the company stop shipping work to plants with nonunion

labor. The sit down strike was the vehicle used to successfully

achieve this and was used at the Fisher Body Plant at Flint,

Michigan. These medals are said to have been given only to the

employees who participated in the strike. (F)

OCEAN LINER NORMANDIE STOPOVER AT RIO DE

JANEIRO, 1938.

68.5mm. Bronze. Jean Vernon, Sc. (Paris

Mint). AU with some minor tarnish areas on the reverse, as shown.

The obverse depicts the Normandie with an inscription in the

exergue detailing her maiden voyage from LaHarve to New

York in 1935. The reverse bears the inscription: SOVVENIR/

DE L’ESCALE/ DV PAQVEBOT/ ‘NORMANDIE’/ A/ RIO

DE JANEIRO/ FEVRIER 1938.

Lot 446

The obverse of this medal is the same as the reverse of the

medal struck for the Normandie’s maiden voyage in 1935 listed

above. This Rio de Janeiro variety is much scarcer. (G)

SAINT GEORGE – AMERICAN EAGLE MEDAL, 1941.

Unlisted by Murtha. 38.5mm. Bronze. Holed for suspension.

XF/AU with some scattered tarnish Mario Korbel (Obv.) & Paul

Manship (Rev.), Sc. Obv: SAINT GEORGE OF ENGLAND

around scene of St. George slaying a dragon inscribed with a

Nazi swastika. Rx: UNITED WE STAND AMERICA around

a displayed eagle.

Issued for the British-American Ambulance Corps. A companion

piece executed entirely by Korbel combined this obverse with a

reverse utilizing a thumbs-up – forward to victory motif. (F-G)

Gilt Bronze. Mario Korbel, Sc. AU. Obverse as above, but

without the MK signature below the dragon. Rx: FORWARD

TO VICTORY around a hand giving the thumbs-up sign. Below

are ocean waves and a laurel branch. Dated 1941 at bottom. (D)

38mm. Gold Plated sterling silver. Donald De Lue, (Obv.)

Sc. (MACO) Lightly toned Uncirculated. Obverse with a

kneeling nude male figure with outstretched hands kneels in

the palm of the Creator. Reverse: NATIONAL SCULPTURE

SOCIETY around FIFTIETH ANNIVERARY.

Only the second of these we have owned. We sold the other

(AU) at auction in 2007 for $545.00.

16 x 11”. A thin copper

shell has been mounted on a 23 x 14 3/4” wooden base.

Signed “M” at lower left, above the “O” in NORMAN. XF/

AU with some minor denting at the bottom in the exergue.
