the right. Incuse inscription below: MADE BY/ PROGRESSIVE

since we sold a similar piece in our 1997 Sale #63 for $158.00

marked “4 MEDALLIC ART CO NY.” C h o i c e Uncirculated.

Obverse with Fraser’s well-known bust of TR to the right,

the Roman numeral dates 1858/1919 in the lower right field.

Fraser’s signature and 1920 date in the left field above the

shoulder. Inscribed above the bust is: FOR DISTINGVISHED

SERVICE. On the reverse the legend, ROOSEVELT

MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION MEDAL OF HONOR surrounds

a crusader’s flaming sword running from top to bottom. To

either side of the sword is a four line inscription: IF I MVST

CHOOSE/ BETWEEN RIGHTOVSNESS/ AND PEACE I

CHOOSE/ RIGHTEOVSNESS.

The Distinguished Service Medal was established by the TRMA

in 1923 to honor outstanding service in fields reflecting the work

and interests of Theodore Roosevelt. It is the organization’s

highest honor. It was awarded annually from 1923-67 (except

in 1941 and 1944) and since 1967, on an occasional basis.

The Distinguished Service Medal is similar in appearance to

the smaller 70mm (and more common) Founders Medal. An
