THEODORE ROOSEVELT - UNLISTED OCTAGONAL
RELIEF BY THOMAS CREMONA, 1933.
7” Bronze.
Octagonal. Thomas Cremona. This attention-grabbing relief
features a profile bust of TR facing right laid over a circular
background containing large letters spelling the word LOYALTY.
Inscribed in the four corners, starting at upper left is FAITH IN/
GOD ALMIGHTY; (upper right) AND GOOD/ CITIZENSHIP;
(lower left) 1901 and (lower right) 1909. The border is raised and
is inscribed at top, THEODORE ROOSEVELT and at bottom,
26
TH
PRESIDENT.
The plaque is displayed under glass within a 14 3/4” square
gilt wooden frame (not entirely shown in the plate) which has
been double matted to accentuate the octagonal outline of the
plaque. Among Thomas Cremona’s other works is his well-
known 1933 FDR Prosperity Plaque and a 1932 rejected design
for the Washington quarter which utilized a design motif with
Washington’s bust laid over the word LIBERTY. Rare – the first
we have en countered! (G-H)

THEODORE ROOSEVELT: MARYLAND GOVERNOR
McKELDIN PLAQUE, 1958.
Fuld-Unlisted; Reed 5820.
88.2 x 69mm Bronze. James Earle Fraser, Sc. Edge:
MEDALLIC ART CO.N.Y, BRONZE. Uncirculated. Bust
right of TR in a tweed suit and wearing pince-nez glasses.
The inscription below: “AGGRESSIVE FIGHTING FOR/ THE
RIGHT IS THE NOBLEST/ SPORT THE WORLD AFFORDS/
is from a speech given by TR when he was New York Police
Commissioner. The reverse bears the inscription: PRESENTED
BY/ THEODORE ROOSEVELT/ McKELDIN/ GOVERNOR
OF MARYLAND/ 1958.
This, of course, is a reduction of the well-known TR plaque
done by JEF in 1920. A small, but unknown, number of these
reductions were ordered by Gov. McKeldin and used as VIP
gifts. We had never seen even one of these until after the
Governor died and a small number were disposed of in his
estate sale. (G)

AREDUCED SIZE UNIFACE FRASER PLAQUE, ND
. 88.4
x 69mm. Bronze. Uncirculated. Edge: MEDALLIC ART CO.,
NY/ BRONZE. As above, but uniface. We are uncertain as to
the period in which this small plaque was struck. We suspect that
it was done around the time of the McKeldin Plaque even though
the edge mark is slightly different. It is the first we can recall
offering at auction. (G)

Handsome front facing bust of TR with a floral spray at its base.
Most of the TR bookends are profiles – this front facing example
is unusual. Better than average artistic quality. (F-G)
