1162. “REMEMBER” – HOLOCAUST MEDAL, ND.
75.5mm. Bronze.
Elizabeth Weistrop, Sc. (MACO- 1983 Danbury edgemark).
Uncirculated. Obverse with a moving scene of a mother kneeling
with a small child cradled in her arms. To her left is another
child with long pigtails. To her right is a German railway boxcar
into which was crammed the helpless humanity destined for the
extermination camps. In the left background is a seeming endless
line of people waiting to enter another of the boxcars. The reverse
is inscribed with the word REMEMBER in Hebrew and English.
To the left is a tree trunk cut down to not much more than a
stump, but with two newly growing branches growing from each
side.
This obverse was originally executed for the “Frankenhuis
Holocaust medallion” which honored Maurice Frankenhuis.
The Frankenhuis Collection was one of the finest collections
of medals relating to the two world wars ever assembled. The
commissioning of this medal to commemorate his collection was
the capstone of his collection. It’s ability to evoke strong emotion
is unparalleled in 20th century medallic art. We have handled a
number of these medals in our 45 years of dealing and more than
once have witnessed tears flowing from those who viewed the
medal for the first time. (F)
