Delong was a prosperous NYC real estate broker and attorney who

made international headlines when on April 6, 1924, while motoring

along one of the wildest mountain areas of Albania, was set upon

by bandits and along with his companion, was murdered. Albania,

believing the crime was a political act to discredit the Government

in the eyes of the world, quickly proclaimed martial law.’’ The

Balkan country took strong measures to track down and arrest the

unidentified highwaymen. Two of the band were killed in a fight

with a posse of gendarmes. A third bandit was wounded, and three

others escaped. On April 12, a grief- stricken Mrs DeLong sailed

to Naples to claim the bodies. We are unable to explain why this

medal was struck in England rather than in the US. (E-F)
