This medal is a cut above in quality over the usual high school

award medal. It was executed by the renowned Swedish medalist,

branches of laurel. At bottom/ FOUNDED 1902. The Sesnan gold

medal is awarded for the best landscape painting in the Academy’s

REVOLUTION around. At the 9, 12 & 34 o’clock positions are oval

wreaths surrounding view of MARSHALL HALL, The White House,

and MOUNT VERNON, AT 6 o’clock is a shield labeled DC upon

which is perched a displayed eagle with a banner in its mouth

inscribed: WELCOME TO WASHINGTON. Below the eagle are

the dates: APRIL 30 MAY 2 1902. Above the eagle is a view of

the Capitol Dome with banners to either side inscribed SONS OF

Unc in original Davidson presentation case. Obv: NEW YORK

LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY above a displayed eagle atop a

radiant globe supported by two kneeling male nudes. Exergue:

1114. OFFICIAL HUDSON-FULTON CELEBRATION MEDAL, 1909.

Miller 42; Baxter 99; Marqusee 187. 51mm. Alum. Emil Fuchs,

Sc. (W&H). Choice Unc. Obverse scene of Hudson and his

sailors on the deck of the Half Moon. The reverse presents an

allegory of Steam Navigation composed of a central female

figure holding a scale model of the first steam powered boat, the

Clermont, flanked by two other seated female figures, one holding

an anchor and the other a navigation chart. (B)

with some scattered spots of tarnish. Still most attractive. Obverse

with jugate busts to the left of Hudson and Fulton, their last

names to either side. Reverse: Seated female figure of Newburgh

with arms outstretched on a pedestal inscribed: NEWBURGH.

Hudson and Fulton’s ships plus others are in the background.

OF/ JOHN CRIER HIBBEN/ AS PRESIDENT OF/ PRINCETON

UNIVERSITY/ MAY ELEVENTH 1912. 1000 medals were struck
