of Liberty on a full pedestal and situated within the bounds of
Fort Wood. Inscribed on a raised plinth below” GENERAL/ SILK/
IMPORTING/ CO. INC/ NEW YORK. Rx: 2 ball feet at the top
corners for service as a paperweight.
The GSI Co. was formed in New York in 1916 and was at one
time, one of the largest silk manufacturing firms in the country. The
firm changed its name in 1932 when it went through a bankruptcy
proceeding. In our opinion, this is one of the more visually
appealing medals in the SOL series. An Unc. example brought
$361.00 in our last sale. (G)
1083. LINDBERGH SAINT LOUIS BANQUET MEDAL, 1927 – ONE
OF ONLY TWENTY FIVE STRUCK IN SILVER.
Gabriel G3-9.
83.2mm. Sterling Silver. (8.45 oz.) Edge marked STERLING. Julio
Kilenyi, Sc. (W&H). Choice Uncirculated. Housed in its original
leather presentation case. Obverse with a standing female figure,
both hands upraised, holding a fleur-de-lis in her right and a U.S.
shield in her left. She is looking upward toward Lindy’s plane;
the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower in the background. The
reverse depicts a globe showing the flight path and a plan above.
Inscribed below; COMMEMORATING/ THE FIRST NEW YORK
- PARIS FLIGHT/ BY CAPT. CHARLES A. LINDBERGH/ SPIRIT
OF SAINT LOUIS/ NEW YORK MAY 20TH PARIS MAY 21ST
1927.
An example of this medal in 14k gold was presented to Lindbergh.
Two others were struck in gold, 25 in silver and 2000 in bronze.
Bronze copies were issued to those in attendance at the banquet
in Lindbergh’s honor on his return to Saint Louis after the flight.
This is the first silver medal we have ever seen appear at auction.
