beautifully toned Uncirculated. The obverse bears a full pedestal

view of the Statue of Liberty with a two line legend to either

side: STATUE OF LIBERTY/ HEIGHTH OF PEDESTAL 89. FT.

TOTAL HEIGHTH 306 FT. 9 IN. The reverse bears an 11 line

inscription commemorating the passing of the 250,000 circulation

mark attained by The World in September 1886; a record for an

American newspaper.

The World

was Joseph Pulitzer’s newspaper. They issued a

number of tokens and medals of which this is by far the most

outstanding. It is one of the earliest pieces depicting the Statue of

Liberty. It is house in its original worn box of issue with

the inside top orange silk stamped COMPLIMENTS/ OF

THE/ NEW YORK WORLD. (G-H)

1886.

Unlisted by Gabriel. & HK. 37.8mm. Chocolate Bronze.

Uncirculated with proof-like surfaces. Obverse: LIBERTY

ENLIGHTENING THE WORLD around a view of the statue. In

tiny letters in the exergue: DEDICATED OCT. 28, 1886. Reverse

Oak wreath enclosing SOUVENIR in ornate script. Rare – only

the second we have seen and the other was WM. (F-G)

BRUXELLES La Libre Pensee was a “freethinkers” association,

a humanist and anti-clerical organization whose ideas spread

throughout Europe. (F)

1072. UNLISTED COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION WATCH FOB., 1893.

See GO-13. A fob attachment with chain links to three 15.6mm

square Silver plated brass tokens also connected by chain

links to a 28.4mm silvered brass drop. AU. There are three

square brass tokens each in XF condition. (1) Obv: Mayer &

Wilhelm style Liberty Head right surrounded by a circle of stars.

Rx: E/ PLURIBUS/ UNUM (2) Obv: View of the U.S. Capitol

Building within a circle of pellets. Rx: IN GOD/ WE/ TRUST.

(3) View of the Statue of Liberty within a circle of pellets. Rx:

UNITED/ WE STAND. DIVIDED/ WE FALL. Suspended by chain

links to a silvered brass token. Obv: WORLDS COLUMBIAN/

EXPOSITION. Above a displayed eagle CHICAGO/ 1893. Rx:

Columbus landing scene dated 1492. (E-F)

1901.

Gabriel G1-1. 12.54mm. Copper. Choice Unc. (Unholed,

and as such – rare) Obv: NY Harbor scene with Statue of Liberty

to left, eagle and ships to center and right. Below: 20/ AVRIL/ 1901.

1074. VISIT OF THE VIENNA MALE CHORAL SOCIETY TO NEW

YRK CITY, 1907.

Gabriel-Unlisted. Niggl 1782. 60.4 x 45.2mm.

Bronze. Joseph Tautenhayn, Jr., Sc. AU with some light scattered

spots as shown. Obverse with a portrait of the choir director,

FRANZ/ SCHNEIDERHAN. The reverse is dominated by a low

relief view of the Statue of Liberty on its pedestal. It is dated 1907

in large numerals at top. Inscribed at upper center is 21 APRIL

28 MAI to either side of the statue. (the dates of arrival in and

departure from NYC.)

The choir sang two concerts at Carnegie Hall and then traveled to

Philadelphia, Baltimore, Buffalo and Milwaukee before returning

to NYC and then sailing for home. The medal is not listed by

John Gabriel but is mentioned by Paul Niggl in his

Musiker-

Medaillen”

Our best guess is that these medals were distributed

to the almost 400 members of the choir party as souvenirs of the

American tour. This would account for the rarity of this medal in

American collections. (F)
