BRONZE edgemark. XF/AU. Obverse: A pedestal, on a
handsome sub-base, supports a statue of Gambetta, who carry’s
the flags of the two provinces lost in the defeat of 1870; in front
is a group of two reclining female figures representing Alsace
and Lorraine; each with a child. On the face of the pedestal are
the words: A/ GAMBETTA/ LES ALSCIENS & LES LORRAINS/
RECONNAISSANTS/ 1891. Inscribed on the sub-base below: PRO
PATRIA and A. BARTHODLI. Legend above around: HOMMAGE A
GAMBETTA DES ALSACIENSE ET LORRAINS/ VILLE D’ AVRAY
SEVRES 1891.
Reverse: The shields of Alsace and Lorraine rest
on a spray of oak, with a profile portrait of Gambetta, facing left, in
a medallion between them. At the bottom center is an uninscribed

as shown. The fable of the lion and the gnat is depicted here with a
lion reclining on its side pawing the air to ward off his bothersome
adversary.
A note in an issue of the 1912 Numismatist states: “M VICTOR
PETER of Paris whose skill in modelling animals has won him
distinction is at work on a series of plaquettes designed to illustrate
the Fables of La Fontaine One of the best of these which have yet
appeared is said to be that of the lion and the gnat.” (E)
