Ridley was an English Bishop who, as one of the Oxford Martyrs,

was burned at the stake during the Marian Persecutions, for his

teachings and support of Lady Jane Grey. One of a series of

medals by Dassier of Protestant Reformers. (C-D)

Struck to commemorate the 100 th anniversary of the replacement

of a Catholic sovereign by a Protestant monarchy. (C)

Obv: Crown below rays within a wreath entwined with a ribbon

inscribed GOD GIVE PRAISE. Legend above: PRESERVED

FROM ASSASSINATION. At bottom: MAY 15, 1800. Rx: Angel

kneeling on a cloud bearing a portrait of the King and protecting

it from an arrow by a shield. GOD SAVE THE KING. (D)

RUSSLAND around a military bust of Alexander left. Signed “L” at

bottom. Rx: RITTER (knight) S; GEORGE around depiction of St.

George and the Dragon.

The obverse die signed “L” is b y John Jacob Lauer and was first

used in 1814. The “L L” signature of the reverse is probably for his

son Ludwig and is probably from the 1830’s-1840’s period. (C)
