70mm. Gilt Bronze. Unsigned. (MACO). Uncirculated, with

someminor spots, as shown. The obverse legend: CALIFORNIA

PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION 1936 surrounds

a view of the California Building at Balboa Park. Ribbon

inscribed: SAN DIEGO below. The reverse features nude male

and female figures, she carrying a cornucopia flying above

the clouds. An elaborate cartouche below is blank – waiting

for inscription. Struck from unsigned hand cut dies, The usual

medal for this exposition is dated 1935. This is first we have

offered with this 1936 date. (I)

1890 ASSAY MEDAL.

JK-AC-33. 33mm. Bronze. Choice

Uncirculated. NGC MS-66. The obverse bears the bust left

of Benjamin Harrison, a depiction which is a reduction of the

portrait used on the Mint’s Presidential Series medal (PR-24).

The reverse is almost identical to that appearing on the 1884

medal described above. (I)

306A. 1903 ASSAY MEDAL.

JK-AC-47. 39.7 x 56.2mm. Silver.

George Morgan, Sc. Uncirculated. Obverse with a facing bust,

THEODORE ROOSEVELT above. In exergue: PRESIDENT

OF THE/ STATES. The reverse depicts an assayer at work, a

motif copied from the reverse of the 1891 issue and repeated in

this format in 1901. This reverse is, of course, dated 1903.

Of the six Theodore Roosevelt portrait Assay Commission

medals, this is the only one with a front facing bust; the other

all use a left profile. We expect this piece to bring in the $1000-

1500 range, but we would be remiss in not noting Stacks sale
