U.S. Mint Medals

of the Choice Uncirculated Virgil Brand specimen in 2008 for

$4,887.50!

307.

1905 ASSAY MEDAL.

JK-AC-49. 56.2 x 39.6mm. Silver.

George Morgan, Sc. Unc. The obverse bears a bust of President

Theodore Roosevelt to the left, his name above and title in

exergue. The reverse depicts the Seal of the Treasury at upper

left and an olive branch below. Inscription: MINT/ OF THE/

UNITED STATES. ANNUAL/ ASSAY/ 1905.

Julian & Keusch note that “Mint department records show that

only ten silver medals (delivered on March 2, well after the

annual meeting) were struck in 1905. In 1906 another silver and

bronze were reported. As there are as many recorded auction

appearances for this 1905 medal as there are for silver TR assay

medals with reported mintages of 40, we suspect that there were

more than 11 silver 1905 medals struck. ($1000-1500)

1907 ASSAY MEDAL.

JK-AC-51; Fuld RO.1907.2. 39.2

x 55.4mm. Silver. Charles Barber (Obv.) & George Morgan

(Rev.), Sc. Choice Uncirculated. Obverse with portrait of

Theodore Roosevelt facing left, inscriptions above and below.

The reverse contains Morgan’s depiction of the arms of the

Because of the Roosevelt portraits, the Assay medals of 1903-

silver were struck of this issue. ($900-1250.00)

1940 ASSAY MEDAL.

JK-AC-85. 50.8mm. Bronze. J.R.

Sinnock & Adam Pietz, Sc. Uncirculated, with light tarnish

throughout. Edge marked: HON. NELLIE TAYLOE ROSS

The obverse features a portrait of Roosevelt to the right which

is a reduced size version of the usually seen medal from

the Presidential Series. The FDR portrait adds an extra

dimension to its desirability. The reverse, showing a view

of the First U.S. Mint Building, shows a motif used on several

earlier assay medals. Prior to the appearance on the present

specimen on the market, the most recent sale of a 1940 ACM was

our 2014 offering of the medal named to US Comptroller of the

Currency Preston Delano which brought $3105.00.

Nellie Tayloe Ross (1876 – 1977)) was the 14th Governor of

Wyoming from 1925 to 1927 and director of the United States

Mint from 1933 to 1953. She was the first woman to be sworn in

as governor of a U.S. state, and remains the only woman to have

served as governor of Wyoming.

1944 ASSAY MEDAL.

JK AC-89. 50.4mm. Bronze. John R.

Sinnock, Sc. (Rev.) NGC MS 64. Choice Uncirculated. Edge

engraved: HON. NELLIE TAYLOE ROSS. Obverse with a bust

of Rittenhouse to the left flanked by the dates 1792 1795 and

surrounded by the legend: DAVID RITTENHOUSE. FIRST

DIRECTOR UNITED STATES MINT. Balance scales below

the bust. The reverse presents a view of Independence Hall

at center and the legend: ANNUAL ASSAY COMMISSON

UNITED STATES MINT PHILADELPHIA/ 1944.

The Rittenhouse bust was apparently hubbed from William

Barber’s portrait of him which appears on MT-1. Sinnock’s

Independence Hall is an adaptation of his reverse for the 1926

Sesquicentennial commemorative $ 2 1/2 gold coin.

The mintage figure for this medal is unknown, but must be quite
