Official Presidential Inaugural Medals
STATES OF AMERICA MMIX surrounds the Presidential
Seal.
`
Daniel Altshuler, the widely respected sculptor, was engaged by
Medallic Art Company to offer this submission for the official
medal. When the Marc Mellon design was selected, Altshuler
had a limited number of medals struck for sale in bronze and
silver and silver plated bronze. (G)

PROPOSED OBAMA INAUGURALMEDAL, 2009.
70mm.
Bronze, Thomas Rogers, Sc. (Medalcraft Mint) Choice Unc.
Obverse with a partially right bust , BARACK H. OBAMA
inscribed above. The reverse bears an open wreath enclosing
the Presidential eagle at top and a scroll below inscribed: 44
TH
PRESIDENT. OF THE/ UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
INAUGURATED JAN. 20, 2009.
The obverse of this medal was a rejected design for the official
medal by Thomas Rogers. This obverse was later used on a
commercial medal marketed by D.C. Merchants in a limited
edition of 500. The reverse was also a rejected design by Mr.
Rogers. The design was altered very slightly by Medalcraft by
substituting the Inaugural Seal for the Presidential eagle and, as
so changed, was used on the Official Inaugural Medal with Marc
Mellon’s reverse.
This medal was purchased by our consignor on eBay from an
unknown seller in 2013 who described it as a “prototype” which
“may be the only one in existence.” While this is unlikely, there
is little doubt as to the rarity of this piece. It is the first that we
have seen. (G)
