CLINTON – GORE PROPOSED INAUGURAL MEDAL, 1997

.

70mm. Bronze. Charles 341, Sc. (Hoffman Mint.) The Hoffman

Mint struck the Official Inaugural Medal in 1993. This jugate

medal was their proposed medal for the 1997 inauguration. It

was rejected in favor of the entry submitted by the Medallic Art

Company. The sculptor, Charles Vickers, was to have more luck

the next time around as it was his portrait of President George W.

Bush that was selected for the 2001 official medal. The obverse

bears jugate busts of Clinton and Gore to the left while the reverse

bears the Presidential Seal surrounding a two line legend which

reads: PRESIDENT WILLIAM J. CLINTON * VICE PRESIDENT

ALBERT A. GORE * / INAUGRATED TO SECOND TERM OF

OFFICE JANUARY 230, 1997. (D)

BARACK OBAMA, 2013

897.

PROPOSED OBAMA-BIDEN OFFICIAL INAUGURAL MEDAL,

2013

. 70mm. Amy Kann, Sc. (Medalcraft Mint) Obverse busts

of Obama and Biden facing right, positioned to the left of center.

Legend: SECOND INAUGURATION * JANUARY 21, 2013. The

reverse depicts a water view of the Statue of Liberty at right.

BARACK/ OBAMA/ JOSEPH/ BIDEN inscribed in the center left

field.

Amy Kann’s non-traditional design is believed by many to be a

more pleasing medallic effort than that which was chosen by the

anonymous executives of the Official Inaugural Committee. Their

artistic judgment and their pricing “expertise” is a clarion call for the

re-establishment of the Inaugural Medals Committee! (C-D)
