This was the only Assay Commission medal ever to be sold

generally to the public. It was offered for a short time in 1977 at

$25.00. It was the final medal in the Assay Commission series -

the end of an era. (D)

INDIAN PEACE MEDALS

1001. MARTIN VAN BUREN.

IP-17. 75.6mm. Copper. Unc. but with a

few dark obverse spots: one under the N of BUREN, another on

the left side of the H of THE and two on Van Buren’s shoulder.

Struck with the Type II reverse die. This medal appears with the

experimental green patina which was used by the Mint for only

a few years around the turn of the century. (E-F)

with very minor tarnish. Obverse with a uniformed bust of

Washington left, WASHINGTON above and the dates 1732 and

1932 separated by his coat of arms below. The reverse bears a

standing figure of Liberty holding a torch and a sheathed sword.

Above, an eagle and 13 scattered stars. The figure separates

the inscription: PROCLAIM - LIBERTY/ THROVGHOVT - ALL

THE LAND. 3500 struck and distributed as second awards in the

various state and regional school essay contests. (C)

The first term Harding medal was struck in three varieties. The first

two varieties were identified in the September 1922 Numismatist

by Farran Zerbe. The variety there illustrated (Var. 1) had the

name MORGAN in very small letters near the edge to the right

of the branch of laurel leaves at the bottom. (Rx. #1). The other

variety (Var. 2) was without the name, plus other slight differences

due to recutting the dies (Rx. #2). Both varieties utilized the same
