tarnish on parts of the legends and inscriptions which has the
effect of making them visually more clearly visible than those areas
which are not so affected. As the obverse indicates, a member of
the League was PLEDGED TO UNCONDITIONAL LOYALTY TO
THE GOVERNMENT AND TO NATIONAL UNITY.
The League was organized in 1861 as a reaction to the
propaganda of the Copperhead movement in the Border States.
This militant group was dedicated to rooting out disloyalty in the
Federal Government and demanded that Southern sympathizers
be dismissed from government employment. (E)
