cradling a cornucopia in her left and stands on a small plinth.

a pebbled background, a plain rectangle with incused scallop

Baden Powell with hat surrounded by a legend on a raised band,

“SOUTH SHIELDS HONOURS HEROIC MAFEKING” Rx: In

the middle, a horizontal scroll inscribed: “S.AFRICA”. Above

this, the Royal coat of arms, and below, and to each side, three

cameos, each showing the bust of a bareheaded uniformed

British general within an oval border. Below, Lord Roberts, front,

with legend: “LORD ROBERTS V.C.”. To the left, General White,

slightly right, with legend: “SIR GEORGE WHITE V.C.” To the

right, General Buller, slightly left, with legend: “SIR REDVERS

BULLER V.C.” The three cameos are linked together by a ribbon

below inscribed: “1899” to the left of Roberts, and: “1900” to the

Unsigned. XF. Holed, as made. Obverse: Crossed standards

both flying the British Union flag. Crown above the intersection.

Between the poles at the top in a shallow arc: “PEACE” and

at the bottom: “CARNIVAL”. Legend above: “HADLEIGH” and

below between diamond ornaments: “THUNDERLEY”. Reverse:

IN / COMMEMORATION / OF THE / ANNEXATION OF / THE

ORANGE FREE STATE / AND TRANSVAAL / OCTOBER 1900.

Hadleigh and Thundersley are neighboring villages in the south

east part of Essex County, England. Almost all of the pieces are

found in white metal. Silver is quite unusual! (E)

Mounted New Zealand Rough Rider with hat, rifle at the ready,

galloping to the left. Legend: “N.Z. ROUGH RIDERS”. On a

plaque below: “KIATOAAKEAKE!” (The New Zealand Maori war

cry ) and below that two crossed New Zealand Fern Tree leaves.

the variety with the “T” of “THE” under the “H” of “ROUGH” The

BADGE, 1906

. This is a four piece bronze hanging badge in

mint condition except for a light stain on the red ribbon. (J.K.

Davison) Pinback header with ribbon insc. ALTOONA above

GAR insignia laid over a cartouche insc. JUNE 1906. Ribbon

suspension ribbon to a bar labeled REPRESENTATIVE. Bottom

35mm bronze drop with legend, 40TH ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT

DEPT. OF PA. G.A.R. around unidentified bearded male

bust at center. Rx: HORSESHOE CURVE above view of the

famous three track railroad curve built in 1854 In exergue:

PENNSYLVANIA/ R.R. Horseshoe Curve has long been a tourist

DEWEY WASHINGTON CITY RECEPTION RELIC BADGE,

1899

. Bronze. XF/AU. This was originally a 3 piece hanging

badge. However, this example is missing both the bronze

header with a view of the U.S. Capitol and the yellow suspension

ribbon bearing the crossed flags of the U.S. and a 4 star admiral.

The reverse of the missing top bar was inscribed: THE BRONZE

IN THIS MEDAL WAS CAPTURED BY/ ADMIRAL DEWEY AT

MANILA.

The middle bar, which is present, is inscribed WASHINGTON

CITY OCT. 1899 on the front and MANILA MAY 1, 1898 on the

back. It suspends via a clamp, a 44.3mm bronze medal bearing

a military bust of Dewey on the obverse and a view of the ship,

Olympia on the reverse. (C)
