this, the Royal coat of arms, and below, and to each side, three
cameos, each showing the bust of a bareheaded uniformed
British general within an oval border. Below, Lord Roberts, front,
with legend: “LORD ROBERTS V.C.”. To the left, General White,

right, General Buller, slightly left, with legend: “SIR REDVERS

Hadleigh and Thundersley are neighboring villages in the south
east part of Essex County, England. Almost all of the pieces are

DEWEY WASHINGTON CITY RECEPTION RELIC BADGE,
1899
. Bronze. XF/AU. This was originally a 3 piece hanging
badge. However, this example is missing both the bronze
header with a view of the U.S. Capitol and the yellow suspension
ribbon bearing the crossed flags of the U.S. and a 4 star admiral.
The reverse of the missing top bar was inscribed: THE BRONZE
IN THIS MEDAL WAS CAPTURED BY/ ADMIRAL DEWEY AT
MANILA.
The middle bar, which is present, is inscribed WASHINGTON
CITY OCT. 1899 on the front and MANILA MAY 1, 1898 on the
back. It suspends via a clamp, a 44.3mm bronze medal bearing
a military bust of Dewey on the obverse and a view of the ship,
Olympia on the reverse. (C)
