CHICAGO COIN CLUB 75TH ANNIVERSARY MEDALS,

1994

. 67.5 x 89.1mm. Sterling Silver. (7.57 oz.) and Bronze.

Struck by Premier Metal Works and based on a sculpture by

James Earle Fraser. Uncirculated. The obverse is a replica

of “The Discoverers.” a sculpture on the Michigan Avenue

Bridge in Chicago. At the top is an allegorical figure of the

Spirit of Exploration rising above two explorers, surrounded

by Indians. One of the kneeling Indians strongly resembles

the Indian on Fraser’s buffalo nickel. The reverse contains a

13 line inscription: COMMEMORATING/ THE/ SEVENTY-

FIFTH/ ANNIVERSARY/ OF THE/ CHICAGO COIN CLUB/

1919 - 1994/ “THE DISCOVERERS”/ A SCULPTURE BY/

JAMES EARLE FRASER/ MICHIGAN AVENUE BRIDGE/

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. A cartouche below is numbered

“00021” on the silver and “00040” on the bronze.

This medal was issued in a edition of 1 10k Gold; 36 Sterling

Silver and 165 Bronze. The issue price of the silver medal was

$125.00. The medals here are each housed in its original box of

issue with pamphlet. (G)

ANA’S GLEN B. SMEDLEY MEMORIAL AWARD

MEDAL, 1998.

67 x 76mm. Oval. Bronze. Unsigned as to both

artist and mint. Choice Uncirculated with original presentation

box, Obverse with front facing bust of Smedley, 1901 GLENN

B./ 1987 SMEDLEY to either side. Rx: Incused inscripti9on:A

AMERICAN/ NUMISMATIC/ ASSOCIATION above engraved

award to PATRICIAA. JAGGERT/ 1998.

Also accompanying this lot is a blue leatherette folio embossed

with the ANA seal containing the signed certificate of award by

ANA President Anthony Swiatek. The Glenn Smedley Memorial

Award was created in 1990 in memory of Glenn B. Smedley

to recognize individuals who have devoted their efforts to the

betterment of the American Numismatic Association.

How odd it is that an important award medal issued by our

country’s premier numismatic organization contains neither the

signature of the sculptor nor the edge mark of the mint? (F-G)

1999.

67.5 x 89.1mm. Sterling Silver. (7.3 oz). and Bronze.

Struck by Premier Metal Works and based on a sculpture by

James Earle Fraser. Uncirculated. The obverse is a replica of

“The Pioneers”, a sculpture on the Michigan Avenue Bridge in

Chicago. At the top is an allegorical figure pointing onward.

The group includes a purposeful-looking man in the foreground,

walking forward with a musket on his shoulder and a hatchet

in one hand. Beside him is a woman on horseback, holding a

baby. The are surrounded by two other pioneers, an Indian

and a team of oxen. The reverse contains a 13 line inscription:
