“The Old Oaken Bucket.” A.W.R. has been identified by Spencer

Radnich as General Ashbel Wells Riley, a Rochester New York

a temperance crusader who sold these tokens to support his

temperance activities. This, and other American temperance

tokens are the subject of a fine article by Spencer in the October

2004 issue of the TAMS Journal. (B-C)

. 23.2mm. Brass.

Holed AU. Obv: Bust of Harrison left with 4 straps & 2 buttons. Rx:

Log cabin with 16 logs; 4 planks and 4 hoops on the barrel. Rulau

pictures this token and calls it WHH 1840-54. It is not. WHH 1840-

54 has a civilian (not a military) bust of Harrison. (C)

J.F. Thomas, Sc. Holed F/VF with some scattered digs on the

obverse. Obverse with a small bust of Van Buren left, MARTIN

VAN BUREN. BORN DEC. 5, 1782 around. The reverse depicts a

scale balanced in favor of DEMOCRATS over WHIGS and dated

1840 surrounded by the legend: WEIGHED IN THE BALANCE

AND FOUND WANTING. (C)

CLAY - ELECTED PRESIDENT AND INAUGURATED MARCH

4TH 1845.

HC 1844-33; HT 805. 25mm. Brass. Holed VF. The Rx.

is weakly struck as usual. Holed, as issued. The obverse is boldly

c/s with a large ornate numeral “7”/ Obv: HENRY CLAY ELECTED

PRESIDENT A.D. 1844 around another doofus- looking bust of

Clay left. Rx: THE MILLBOY OF THE SLASHES/ INAUGURATED

over a scene showing horse & rider traveling toward a mill.

Below: MARCH 4TH, 1845. The date has been repunched over

a previously unwanted inscription. The old-timers often referred

to this token with its hopeful recitation of Clay’s election and

inauguration as “The Clay Lying Token”.

Please note that the Rulau photo above HT 805 is in fact that of HT

806 and vice versa. (D)

HC 1844-35.

24mm. Brass. Reeded edge. Unsigned, but ascribed

to J.F. Thomas. XF. Holed, as issued. Obv: HENRY CLAY BORN

APRIL 12, 1777/ THE ASHLAND FARMER around a naked Clay

left. The date, 1844, runs upward diagonally below the truncation

of the bust. Rx: Wreath around THE NOBLE/ AND/ PATRIOTIC/

SUPPORTER/ OF/ PROTECTION. (E-F)

Rx: Within a wreath: THE NOBLE/ &/ PATRIOTIC/ SUPPORTER/

OF THE/ PEOPLES RIGHTS. The revere has been c/s at center

with the numeral “1”. Scarce variety with all 3 initials on the bust.

Robert Lovett, Jr., Sc. Proof-Like Unc. with a light fingerprint mark

on the obv. Obverse: Togated bust of Clay to the right, his name

to either side. Reverse: THE UNION AND THE CONSTITUTION

around THE/ ELOQUENT/ ADVOCATE OF/ PROTECTION/ TO/

HOME INDUSTRY. 25 struck in Brass.

This is one of a series of tokens issued by Robert Lovett, Jr. of

Philadelphia in the 1860 period. Included are portrait pieces of

Clay, Jackson, Harrison and Washington. Woodward stated in the

McCoy Sale that 10 were struck in Silver and 25 each in Copper,

Brass and White Metal. The obverse were all muled with each

other and struck with mintages of 5 in each metal. (E-F)

Roine, Sc. (Davison’s Sons, Phila.). XF/AU with a reddish bronze

patina. Obv: WITH MALICE TOWARD NONE WITH CHARITY

FOR ALL around bust of Lincoln left flanked by dates 1809

1909. Rx: Oak & laurel wreath surrounding: THIS MEDAL/ WAS

STRUCK FOR/ THE GRAND ARMY/ OF THE REPUBLIC/ IN

COMMEMORATION/ OF THE/ 100TH ANNIVERSARY/ OF THE

BIRTH OF/ ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

King comments that, “... as a work of art it ranks as one of the best

medals yet issued for the G.A.R.. It was copyrighted in the name of

the commander-in-chief of the G.A.R. and his successors in office.

The issue was limited to 8500 copies. The first medal was struck

in April, 1909 and the last impression from the corrected dies July

3rd, 1911. There are 3 obverse die varieties of this medal. The

first has the words “Copyright Davison’s Sons Phila.” under the

bust near the edge, and the initials of the artist, J.E. Roine, incuse,

under 1909. The shoulder does not go to the edge. The second

die is the same without the monogram “J.E.R.” A die break shows

on the truncation. On the third die, of which this is an example, the

shoulder goes to the edge of the medal and “Copyright” etc. is on

the shoulder. The artist’s initials are lacking on this die. Medals

from the first two dies were struck only in bronze while medals

from the last die were struck in bronze, silver and aluminum. (E)
