Ship’s Cook, First Class.

USS Baltimore was an armored cruiser commissioned in 1890.

Under the command of Captain Nehemiah Dyer, who had served

under Admiral Farragut at Mobile Bay, Baltimore took her place

second in Admiral George Dewey’s battle line as the American

fleet destroyed the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay on 1 May 1898.

Baltimore suffered the fleet’s only casualties, as two officers and

six men were wounded by Spanish shell fragments. (H)

FIELD MARSHALL GRAF VON HAESELER, 1915.

Frankenhuis 703; Steguweit 109. 100.6m. Cast Bronze.

(The usual example is found in cast iron.) Arthur Lowental,

Sc. Edge marked: DS20 37. About Uncirculated. Obverse:

FELDMARSCHAL GRAF VON HAESELER 1915. around a

bust to the right of the Prussian Field Marshall wearing a spiked

helmet. Reverse: CHIRON ACHILL to either side of a scene

depicting Von Haeseler, in the form of the centaur, Chiron,

instructing a nude figure of Achilles in the use of a bow and

arrow.

Gottlieb Graf von Haeseler (1836-1919) was promoted to the

rank of field marshal in January 1905. He was 78 years old at

the Great War’s outbreak and thus never received command

of an army. Instead, he acted as senior military advisor to the

otherwise capable XVI. Army Corps commander von Mudra.

Haeseler’s importance lies primarily in his efforts to achieve a

thorough military training of soldiers and his depiction as Chiron,

the teacher, is meant to convey that thought.
