These two archivally framed copperplate engravings were executed by Matthäus
Merian for Dr. John Jonston’s tome
Historiae Naturalis
, circa 1660. The images of the
rhinoceros and elephant were offered by Denise DeLaurentis of D. M. DeLaurentis
Fine Antique Prints, Philadelphia, who priced the rare engravings at $1200 each.
Mark & Marjorie Allen Antiques, Gilford, New
Hampshire, displayed this oil on canvas of young
hunters with their dogs by John Henry Hill (1839-1922).
It was tagged $9500. Left to right on the bench shelf
are a C B Norton crock, circa 1860, marked $375; an
R C Remmey crock, circa 1820, priced at $600; and an
unmarked cobalt-decorated crock, $195. The tobacco
jars were $300 (left) and $200. The English earthenware
gin dispenser featuring molded decorative figures and an
armorial crest, mid-19th century, was $900. The bucket
bench is from Pennsylvania and was $1500.

Antiques, Midlothian, Virginia,
has become a regular exhibitor at
the Washington Winter Show. The
highly figured one-drawer maple
stand, circa 1820, was tagged $1495.
The Regency thermometer-clock-
barometer by F. Amadio & Son
of London features a swan’s neck
pediment with a small brass urn
finial. The piece was $3495.

www.stephenjmpalmer.comThis large trapunto quilt dominated one wall of the booth of Diana H.
Bittel of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The black velvet field has finely
stitched three-dimensional designs of floral wreaths and flower baskets in
bright colors, set within a gold-stitched vine-like border. The circa 1860
quilt may be English or American. It was marked $7500. The circa 1860
carved maple settee features scrolled arms and heavily carved medial back
rails and was tagged $3800.
During the Anglo-French Wars at the turn of the 19th century,
French naval prisoners often made the most of their time in captivity
by creating model ships from scraps of bone and other materials
that they could acquire. This 25" long model of a 38-gun French
frigate is an example. The model has been completely and carefully
restored and was offered for $13,750 by Dave White of White’s
Nautical Antiques, North Yarmouth, Maine.
This mid-20th-century painting is by Claude Venard (French,
1913-1999), considered a member of the post-Cubist movement
and known for his impasto application of color.
Nude on the
Beach
, 29" square, is signed by the artist and dates circa 1960.
The painting was offered by David Brooker Fine Art, Southport,
Connecticut. It was priced at $28,900.
