During the Anglo-French Wars at the turn of the 19th century,

French naval prisoners often made the most of their time in captivity

by creating model ships from scraps of bone and other materials

that they could acquire. This 25" long model of a 38-gun French

frigate is an example. The model has been completely and carefully

restored and was offered for $13,750 by Dave White of White’s

Nautical Antiques, North Yarmouth, Maine.

This mid-20th-century painting is by Claude Venard (French,
