19th Century Merchant Tokens

AWARDED AS THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL MAKER OF

GOLD WATCH DIALS IN AMERICA. A SILVER MEDAL

BY THE FRANKLIN INST. 1832. A GOLD MEDAL BY THE

AMERICAN INST. 1834/ A MEDAL AWARDED BY THE

MECHANICS INSTITUTE, N.Y. 1835, is in the exergue.

One of the most beautiful and well executed storecards of the

19th century. With the exception of this piece, Louisa Lander

is unknown as a medalist. However, she does have a substantial

reputation as a sculptor and left a large body of well-received

6 pieces were struck by Mason in copper, but the dies were sold

to Edwards who probably issued a small, but unknown number

of restrikes. The Rulau description of MaSp-A15 is in error. The

obverse of Storer 1630 is as described above, not that showing

the Armory building view as indicated by Rulau. (G-H)

WOOD CORD TOKEN.

28mm. Copper. Very Fine. Incused

inscriptions on both sides. Obv: M.C.R.R./ ENG NO, 13/

WOOD. Rx: ½/ CORD.

Rulau lists 6 varieties of MCRR wood cord tokens, but does not

list an example like this with the engine number inscribed on the

obverse. (F)

a small obverse corrosion spot at 9:30. Obverse with a fur

capped portrait of Benjamin Franklin surrounded by 13 stars.

Louisa Lander, Sc. Struck by C.C. Wright. Extremely Fine

with rims very lightly abraded. Obverse with male head to

the left surrounded by the legend: WM. J. MULLEN, GOLD

DIAL MANUFACTURER, ESTABLISHED 1828 N. YORK.

The reverse presents a laboratory with five youths at work in

various departments. Three figures above, one of them winged.

A female crowns one of the youths with a wreath. MEDALS
