This extremely early Howard
Finster (1916-2001) work,
Cyrpus
Bell Tower
, from 1978, is from
before he used his numbering
system. The wood-burned board
construction has a self-portrait
figure with “Howard’s First
Carving” handwritten on the
back. An important example, it
brought $8520, the highest price
of the 34 Howard Finster lots
offered in this sale. Steiner photo.
Not all folk artists who carved wood
painted their creations. This astrological
panel for Cancer by Ulysses Davis (1914-
1990) features glitter and clear lacquer. It
sold for $6120. Steiner photo.
One of two carved and painted busts in this sale by
S.L. Jones (1901-1997),
Man with Red Bow Tie
won
the bidders’ vote at $7320. Steiner photo.
Among the seven lots of game boards was this interesting
Civil War commemorative example, which features the
flags and generals of the two sides. One bidder took all for
$480. Steiner photo.
Ray Morroni executed a number of World War II
Army Air Force related carved and painted wood
relief plaques. This plaque commemorating the
“331st Air Service Sqdn” of the 15th Air Force
flew to a collector for only $90. Steiner photo.
This version of the
Last Supper
, 25" x 31", by Justin
McCarthy (1891-1977) may rankle some believers
with its inclusion of women wearing bold makeup.
It didn’t bother the high bidder at $8400, which was
well over the $3000/5000 estimate. Steiner photo.
Perhaps this 9" x 12" oil on canvas by Linda Anderson (b. 1941)
became a special Christmas gift to someone at $900. Steiner photo.
At 41" x 35", this large paint on paperboard by
Bahamian artist Amos Ferguson (1920-2009) blends
tropical paradise with an angel blowing a conch
horn. It sold for a sound $6000. His boldly colored
works are generally scriptural or Bahamas scenes,
with this work a blend of the two. Steiner photo.
