This Althof, Bergmann & Co. painted tin and cast-iron two-horse gig with
a painted composition figure with tin hands and boots is scarce. The black
figure is dressed in a very early replaced jacket and two-color cap and
retains the original pants, although they are seriously frayed. The body
of the gig is original but has a faded paint surface. The strong clockwork
mechanism propels the toy and imparts the galloping motion to the
horses, which both retain original paint. The 17" long gig sold for $3840
(est. $2000/3000).
This Lionel standard-gauge Blue Comet passenger train set with nickel trim includes a no. 400E
electric steam profile 2-4-4 engine, a no. 400W oil tender, a no. 421 Westphal car, a no. 420 Faye
car, and a no. 422 Tempel observation car with correct individual numbered boxes. With a 31" long
engine and tender and 19" long
cars, the set sold for $6000 (est. $6000/9000) in a generally weak
train market. Not shown, a Lionel standard-gauge 381E special green State train set included a no.
381E Bild-A-Locomotive 4-4-4 electric engine, a no. 412 California car, a no. 413 Colorado car, a
no. 414 Illinois car, and a no. 416 New York observation car with appropriate numbered individual
boxes. With a 17" long locomotive and 22" long
coaches, the set sold for $8400 (est. $7000/10,000).
This “Bennett Overalls and Shirts” painted pine advertising sign also
reads “Warranted Not to Rip / Ask for the Perfect Fitting” on a green
background. The Bennett & Co. Clothing Bazaar was located at 182 Market
Street, Philadelphia. The back of the sign is stamped “Elmira Sign Works.”
Measuring 10½" x 22¾", it sold for $3600 (est. $2000/2500).
Bishop Auckland live

Märklin O-gauge no. TK66/12920 train locomotive, European profile,
4-6-4 electric tank locomotive with integral tender, 13½" long, sold for
$3936 (est. $1800/2200).
Painted tin and wood carousel wind-driven toy with
painted wood animals and iron figures all mounted
on a bicycle rim and on a carved wooden base,
51" high x 24" diameter, sold for $5412
(est. $2000/4000). At the Barney Barenholtz
sale at Sotheby’s in January 1990, it had sold
for $6600 (est. $3500/4500).
Rare Arcade cast-iron Brinks Express
Company paneled delivery truck with an
opening rear door and an eagle decal on the
roof, 11¾" long, with losses to tires and paint,
sold for $7800 (est. $6000/8000).
This Kingsbury pressed steel
clockwork wrecker with rubber
tires, 13" long, sold for $3360 (est.
$2000/3000). It is a rare one.

This rare large Schoenhut dappled
white-painted wood Pony Blitz riding
horse, 21" high x 26" long, sold for
$3120 (est. $3000/6000). It is extremely
rare, but it is big and does not fit on
a shelf, as do most Schoenhut toys. It
is missing its original saddle, and the
condition is not pristine.
Steiff mohair teddy bear, early 20th
century, with shoe-button eyes and
a button in the ear with the “F”
drawn back to the “E,” 19" high,

stamped “10/0” and various
composition meats including a
pig head, hams, and sausage, etc.,
20½" high x 15" wide, sold for
