This tambour lap desk was inlaid
with a compass rose, diamonds,
and stars of scrimshaw bone,
ivory, and abalone. The interior
was fitted with a sperm whale
stamp. The contents included
circa 1880 documents relating to
the purchase of sperm whale oil.
It sold on the phone for $885.
A 28" wide carved plaque of a right whale with baleen by
Clark Voorhees (1911-1980) realized $1062.
Cape Ann, Massachusetts, artist Stanley Wingate Woodward (1890-
1970) signed this 25" x 30" oil on canvas (under glass) of a stormy
sea. It realized $2124.

1940) brought $2065.
A 48" long fish
weathervane by Martha’s
Vineyard sculptor Travis
Tuck (1943-2002) went to
a phone bidder for $1770.
The 19th-century walnut
and brass ship’s wheel
was a massive affair at 5'.
It sold for $560.50.
The carved carousel
horse, circa 1900, with
a roached mane was
painted with pastel
flowers and is on an iron
stand. It brought $3835.
An oil on canvas with silk embroidery, 19" x 35½", depicting the steam yacht
Felicia
by
New York and Connecticut artist Thomas Willis (1850-1925) brought $1770. Willis, who
was largely self-taught, worked for a silk thread manufacturer, and most of his canvases
incorporated thread and fabric. The
Felicia
belonged to Eliphalet W. Bliss and was one of
the fastest vessels of the New York Yacht Club.
A bone model, 9" x 7", of the three-masted ship
Swordfish
with full rigging
was attributed to Charles Sayles Sr. of Nantucket and sold for $2950.
