A lack of a signature kept this tall clock to $1610
despite inlays that include a patriotic spread-wing
eagle on the waist door and a hand-painted clock
face showing a colorful bird and roses.
Signed Tiffany Studios lamp with a bronze base and
apple-green slag glass shade, signed on both the base
and the shade, $4600.
John Joseph Enneking (1841-1916) was a preeminent New England landscape artist
of the late 19th century. He painted in a wide variety of styles from Hudson River to
Impressionism. This 12" x 13½" oil on board of a misty view of late autumn foliage on
a rocky hillside suggests Tonalism, and it brought a well-deserved $2990.
This 17" x 21" patriotic silk eagle tribute reads, “HERMAN. METZGER. / ACTING
HOSPITAL STEWARD. / U. S. ARMY. / ARRIVED. APRIL. 23. 99. / LEFT DEC. 30.
99.” According to the
Congressional Record
, during that time Metzger was issued a
commendation for bravery at the Battle of Zapote River in the Philippine-American
War for “his bravery and efficiency…June 13, 1899, being always on the firing line,
and especially exposing himself, with Private Burnett F. Crowell, in order to attend a
wounded soldier.” The textile brought $258.75. Hap Moore photo.
