Rare and Possibly Unique Bird-form Weathervane,

American, ca. 1865-1875.

Copper, copper tubing, iron. Excellent condition with a wonderful verdigris surface

and traces of the original gold leafing. Provenance: Private Collection, CT. Purchased

in the early 1960’s. 33¾" h x 40" l. This unusual and unknown form to us appears to be

of a dove. The curvilinear lines and balanced proportions are very successful giving it

a slight abstract feel to it as well. The quality of the construction suggests it was made

by a skilled craftsman. The front portion of the arrow-head is wrapped with copper,

a technique not commonly seen. The over-all condition coupled with the untouched

original surface also adds to its desirability.

William Joseph Weaver (1759-1817), Anglo-American,

Portrait

of John James Stewart,

Ca. 1800. Oil on mahogany panel. Excellent

condition, very minor scattered in-painting along edges of panel

Possibly in original frame. 25 7/8" x 19 15/16"; 31½" x 25¼"

framed. Provenance: Private Collection, Maine to 2014; Jeffrey

Tillou Antiques, Litchfield, CT, 2000; Private dealer Leo Wolensky,

Wurtsboro, NY, circa 1989; by descent in the family of the original

owners, the Hopkins-Stewart Family. Literature: Paul D. Schweizer.

The “Strong and Striking” Likenesses of William J. Weaver (c.

1759-1817): An Introduction

. MESDA. Journal of Early Southern

Decorative Arts. November 1992. Vol. XVII, 2, p. 29.

Paint-decorated Blanket Chest,

Schoharie or Albany County, New York, ca. 1815-1830. Pine, paint decorated, iron hinges.

Minor imperfections such as abrasions with very minor in-painting. The blanket chest has survived in a remarkable state of

preservation, with the original paint decoration. Provenance: Private Collection, Massachusetts. 21" h x 47" w x 20" d.

The molded lift-top opens to a well fitted interior with a till, all on a molded bracket base. The original painted decoration on

a blue ground includes a central urn of roses flanked by the letters,

C.C

. and bordered by a meandering budded vine flower at

each corner.
