Stair Galleries is very pleased to announce the sale of The Collection of

Joseph T. Butler on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 11am. A resident of the

Hudson Valley, Mr. Butler was a curator, connoisseur and recognized

scholar in the world of antiques, as well as the author of several books

on American antiques and collecting. For thirty-eight years, Mr. Butler

served as the curator of Historic Hudson Valley, the Rockefeller-funded

organization that is responsible for the preservation of Sunnyside, Van

Cortlandt Manor, Philipsburg Manor, Montgomery Place and Union

Church of Pocantico Hills.

The Collection of Joseph T. Butler reflects the personal tastes and

interests of a curator and professional connoisseur. His core focus was

American paintings and decorative arts, most notably the Prendergast

works and a fine group of Federal and Classical Carved Mahogany

furniture. He also traveled extensively and collected Southeast Asian

and Indian sculpture, African and North Western artifacts.
