A Pair of Mounted Jockeys
by Emmanuel Frémiet
(French, 1824-1910) had an impressive exhibition
history. First exhibited at the 1855 Paris Salon and
then at the Exposition Universelle of 1859, it was
later sent abroad to be exhibited in Antwerp in
1885 and Copenhagen in 1888 before it returned
to one of its original debut venues, the Exposition
Universelle, 30 years later in 1889. This bronze
realized $32,200 (est. $30,000/40,000).
Studies of Silvo
(two shown) and
Landscapes of ‘Snail Well’
(two not shown), SirAlfred James Munnings (British, 1878-
1959), oil on panel, inscribed front on panel one “Study of
Silvo,” inscribed on the back panel two “Studies at Snail-
well near Newmarket,” each 12¼" x 7½", $69,000 (est.
$70,000/90,000) for all four images.
Silvo was a decorated jumper, having won the Grand
Steeplechase de Paris in June of 1925 and 13 steeplechases
in England (including the Grand Sefton and Champion at
Aintree). In 1925 he was sold at the Newmarket October
sale in order to dissolve the partnership between Mr. W.H.
Midwood and Sir E. Edgar. Both men wanted this horse.
Midwood earned the right with a bid of 10,500 guineas, an
enormous sum for a gelding. The landscapes of Snailwell
show an area well known for breeding and training horses,
which filled Munnings with admiration.
Dead Heat for the Doncaster St. Leger 1850 between Voltigeur
and Russborough
, Henry Thomas Alken Sr. (British, 1785-
1851), oil on canvas, 14" x 21", signed, inscribed and dated
1850, $69,000 (est. $25,000/35,000).
Un taureau et un ours
(Bull and Bear),
Isidore
Jules Bonheur (French, 1827-1901), bronze
having a rich green/brown patina, 30" x 41¼",
$138,000 (est. $120,000/180,000). One of only
two in this size.
Bill Hartack Wins with Majestic Prince
, LeRoy Neiman
(1921-2012), oil on panel, signed and dated ’69, 36" x
60", $143,750 (est. $125,000/150,000). Though it was
Bill Hartack’s fifth Kentucky Derby win, it was this
jockey’s first Kentucky Derby win aboard the favorite.
Majestic Prince also won the Preakness but suffered a
right front tendon injury, which resulted in a second-
place finish at the Belmont and no Triple Crown.
