Nelson Shanks (1937-2015), portraitist of such
notables as Diana, Princess of Wales, U.S. Presidents
William Jefferson Clinton and Ronald Reagan, and
His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, depicted another
famous figure, Frederic Remington’s
Bronco Buster
.
The image is a window-like view of the statue with
what appears to be the arm of a museum patron
along the right side. The 32¼" x 20¼" painting is
signed lower right and sold to a telephone bidder for
$3360 (est. $200/400).
This 16½" diameter platter is from the Our America
pattern of dinnerware by Vernon Kilns, Vernon,
California. The artwork was designed in 1937 by
Rockwell Kent (1882-1971). Kent provided the artwork
for three different patterns produced by Vernon
Kilns—Salamina, Moby Dick, and Our America. This
single example sold to an Internet buyer for $625 (est.
$200/300).

$30,000/50,000. The portrait failed to
meet its reserve and was passed.

This 35" x 48¼" oil on canvas depicts
northern Italy’s Lake Como and is by
Alois Arnegger (Austrian, 1879-1963). The
landscape scene shows a woman walking
beside the lake along a garden path amid
brightly colored foliage and with a villa in
the background. The painting was hotly
contested among several individuals in
the room. It ultimately sold for $3900 (est.
$1000/2000).
This colored woodblock print is by Helen Hyde (1868-1919), who
is best known for her sensitive depiction of women and children.
She lived and studied for ten years in Japan, concentrating
on woodblock print techniques. This image shows a Japanese
woman and child beside a body of water with blooming cherry
trees in the background. The 6¼" x 7½" print, signed lower right
and carved with her name and “1910” in the block, sold to an
Internet buyer for $468.75 (est. $300/500).
