Kim Martindale of Venice, California, copro-
ducer of the show, asked $3200 for this 1970s
Navajo wearing blanket, 6' x 4½".
Jeff Voracek of Rocklin, California,
priced this 9½' long 19th-century
Navajo blanket made with homespun
yarn at $8500.
Michael Smith Gallery, Princeville, Kauai,
Hawaii, was exhibiting this 80" x 55" Navajo
weaving, “Possibly,” said Smith, “by legendary
weaver Daisy Tauglechee.”
Santa Fe, New Mexico, dealer Christopher
Selser asked $1950 for this Rio Grande
Pueblo (“Cochiti?”) 16" high x 14" diameter
drum.
Bryan Taylor of the
American Indian Shop,
Fresno, California,
asked $225 for this
Santo Domingo
necklace made in the
1920s-40s “from any
kind of plastic and
turquoise to sell at
railroad stations.”
Discarded tires and
phonograph records
are some of the recycled
materials that were
used as backings.
John Hill of Scottsdale, Arizona, asked
$11,000 for this Navajo Germantown
manta, 1890-1900, 4' x 5'. Hill told
M.A.D.
that the 2016 show was better
than last year. He also enjoyed good
sales at setup. “Dealers are more
voracious than collectors because
they really know what they want.”
Hill specializes in kachinas, but, he
said, “Jewelry is really what’s hot,
especially classic things (Kenny
Begay, Leekya) that are so easy
to sell.” Hill exhibited only at the
Antique American Indian Art
Show, which he called “by far the best looking. Quality is building,” with more dealers moving
over from other shows.
