This is
The Hill Road in Winter
by George William Sot-
ter (1879-1953), a 36" x 40" oil on canvas, signed “G.W.
Sotter” on the
lower right. It has an unidentified label on
the back, and there is a Bernard Badura frame on it. The
unusually large scale makes it a fine example of a Sotter
winter nocturne. It sold to a phone bidder for $147,750 (est.
$100,000/150,000). It had received extra publicity the week
before the sale when Nichol used it as a prop on public tele-
vision to announce an appraisal day to benefit the WHYY
public radio and television station in Philadelphia.
Walter Elmer Schofield (1867-1944),
Hillside Farm,
Cornwall
, oil on canvas, 25¾" x 29 7/8", with a label on
the back “State Fair of Texas, Dallas.” It sold to a collec-
tor in the salesroom for $53,125 (est. $20,000/30,000). A
recent exhibition at the Woodmere Art Gallery made the
public aware of Schofield’s work.
George William Sotter (1879-1953),
Barn on a Winter
Night
, oil on board, 13 3/8" x 16", inscribed “Rev. &
Mrs. DeChant from the Sotters.” This was possibly a
picture of the DeChant barn and was probably painted
en plein air
. This sparkling winter nocturne was a crowd
favorite, and it sold for $111,750 (est. $40,000/60,000).
George Gardner Symons (1863-1930),
Creek in Winter
,
20" x 25", signed “Gardner Symons” on bottom right,
also inscribed “1919 20 x 25” in ink on the back. It sold for
$21,250 (est. $10,000/15,000). Symons was a contemporary
of Edward Redfield, but Symons’s winter scenes are less
expensive than Redfield’s snow scenes. Not shown, a snow
scene by Redfield later in the auction sold to a collector in
the salesroom for $62,500.
Arthur Meltzer (1893-1989),
Season’s Melody
