Monumentally Sized Running Horse Weathervane- “Nelson”
New York City, circa 1892
Molded copper, cast brass, magnificent original patina of worn gilt and verdigris, in unrestored as found condition with highly
desirable early “in use” solder repairs to openings in seams, 31 x 44 x 5 inches
“Nelson” was a nationally famous record setting trotter in the 1890s. This exact model is pictured in the 1892 J. L. Mott
catalog on page 13, described as “Plate 19-Q. Nelson,Full-bodied.” It was originally sold for an impressive $90.
This is the finest example of this form that we have encountered.
Note:
Accompanying this weathervane is a unique watercolor map of the "J.L. Mott Ironworks," Mott Haven, Westchester County,
New York, C 1880-1900, shown screened in the background of this advertisement. This important record is the only map of
its kind representing the factory of a major nineteenth century weathervane manufacturer known to us.
Provenance:
A Midwestern private collection
