18-B Maine Antique Digest, May 2015
The player in this 1888 Old Judge glass negative
is pitcher and outfielder George Edward “Stump”
Weidman (1861-1905), who played for five differ-
ent teams including the Buffalo Bisons, the Detroit
Wolverines, and the New York Metropolitans. He’s
shown here in a New York uniform. Unlike the acer-
bic “Kid” Elberfeld, Weidman had a reputation as a
gentlemanly player. In his obituary, the
Sporting Life
newspaper described him as “a clean-cut, honest and
well behaved ball player, and a credit to his profes-
sion at all times. Peace to his ashes." His memory
was well served with a $1955 price for the negative.

A 1909 T206 card (left) for legendary pitcher Den-
ton True “Cy” Young (1867-1955), who still holds the
record for major league victories by a wide margin
at 511, showed the barehanded Young on a multicol-
ored background, was graded very good, and sold
for $862.50. Clearly illustrating the importance of
condition, a Cy Young T206 graded excellent (above)
hit the sweet spot for $3335.
Mickey Mantle is still
regarded as the greatest
switch hitter of all time.
His “tape measure” home
runs, often exceeding 500
and approaching 600
feet, have seldom been
matched. His Bowman
rookie card from 1951 is
a sought-after prize, and
this one, graded very good
to excellent, cleared the
wall at $3565.
SamMoffet (1857-1907) was an outfielder and pitcher for the Indianapolis Hoosiers
in 1887 and 1888. He wasn’t exactly a superstar. His 1887 pitching record for the
team was one win and five losses, and his batting average was .122. After leaving
baseball in 1888, he had better luck as a miner in Montana, where one newspaper
reported that he struck it rich to the tune of $40,000. Here he’s immortalized in
an 1888 Goodwin Old Judge glass plate negative (left) that sold for $575, and he
showed his pitching form in a negative that sold for $632.50.
