Maine Antique Digest, May 2015 5-C

At the preview on Friday night for Case’s January 24 auction, John

Case (center left) discussed the pair of Ralph E.W. Earl portraits with

a client, while a couple nearby examined a diminutive miniature side-

board. Albertson photo.

Later in the

sale, amid a

group of Native

American lots, a

large, 10¼" high

signed Acoma

olla decorated

with red and

black geometric

patterns

sold

well

beyond

its estimate for

$4484.

Born in Hungary, Maurice Braun (1877-1941) studied

and worked in New York before moving in 1909 to San

Diego, where he became an important artist in the Cal-

ifornia Impressionist movement. Competing bidders lit

up all the phones at Case; the modest $5000/8000 esti-

mate was quickly surpassed as the signed landscape rose

to $24,780.

Active in Alabama politics, Benajah

Smith Bibb (1796-1884) may have been

called “Sandy” or even “Ginger” by his

friends. His bright hair and blue eyes

were captured in this circa 1830 minia-

ture painted by English/American art-

ist Hugh Bridport (1794-1868), which

brought $3422 (est. $1200/1400).

Military archives from the Scales family, divided into several lots, dominated the historical

segment of the January sale. The depth of the material cannot be captured in a photograph,

but detailed catalog entries document the contents for future historians. First up was a pho-

tographic album archive belonging to Confederate naval officer Dabney Scales (1841-1920)

of Memphis, who was aboard the C.S.S.

Shenandoah

. This lot of images and documents,

which brought $19,470, will enter the permanent collection of the Tennessee State Museum

in Nashville.
