Maine Antique Digest, April 2015 31-C

Pennsylvania walnut schrank, late 18th century, with star-inlaid doors,

86" high x 65½" wide, sold on the phone for $18,000, underbid in the

salesroom by dealer Jamie Price. The feet had been added; originally,

it probably never had feet. The side cornice was replaced, there are

shelves on one side and hanger knobs on the other, and it comes apart

for moving.

This lot of Cook family items included an 11½" x 13" needlework sampler, dated 1823,

wrought by “Mary Cook born in 1811,” with family names below the alphabet; Leah

Cook’s bookplate that reads “Leah W. Cooks Book bought by her father in Hanover in

1830”; Leah’s pen-and-ink multiplication table, dated 1831; and a 12"

diameter scherenschnitte valentine, dated 1830, which includes Cook

family names. These all sold to a member of the family in the salesroom

for $5760.

Philadelphia Tucker porcelain urn, dated 1828,

with the initials “ACW” in gilt, probably for

the modeler Andrew Craig Walker, the reverse

side with floral decoration, 10½" high, sold on

the phone for $2640 (est. $1500/2500). A section

of the base was restored.

Philadelphia Tucker porcelain vase, circa 1825, with

grisaille landscape decoration, the reverse with flo-

ral decoration, 11 5/8" high, with repairs and chips,

sold for $7800 (est. $1500/2500) to a phone bidder.

This carved and painted

kangaroo, probably

Pennsylvania, retaining

its original red and black

spotted decoration, 27¾"

high x 47" long, found in

Lebanon, Pennsylvania, had

sold at the John Gordon

sale at Christie’s in 1999

for $17,250. It failed to

sell at Sotheby’s Esmerian

sale when it was estimated

at $80,000/ $120,000, and it

failed to sell at Pook & Pook

on October 4, 2014, estimated at $30,000/50,000. This time it

sold for $19,200 (est. $5000/10,000) to a phone bidder.
